Illamasqua’s new Expressionist collection is the antidote to boring make-up
Are you guilty of wearing the same make-up every day? Illamasqua's inspiring new summer collection may just be what you need to bust out of your beauty rut...
After a quick chat about make-up with the female contingent of the Octer team, one thing became quickly apparent: we wear the same make-up everyday. Day in, day out, we all have the go-to products that we reach for on repeat, with the minimalists amongst us religiously applying concealer and mascara, and the rest of us who layer on a few extras such as a foundation or BB cream base, eyeshadow, eyeliner, blush, bronzer and a sweep of highlighter to finish depending on how trigger-happy we’ve been with the snooze button that morning. If we need a little more, a red lip is the pick-me-up that we all agreed on to see us through a work event, date or particularly bad hangover.
Some may call it a rehearsed routine; a well-oiled machine. Others, however, call it being stuck in a rut.
Through trial and error over the years we’ve learnt what works, sure - but our make-up is not exactly what you’d describe as exciting. But make-up, more so than ever before, IS exciting. Every day there’s a cult new product or eye-catching collection launch that flashes up on our Insta ads that tempts us to deviate from the norm, but most of us frankly wouldn’t know how to welcome a new recruit in the group if we tried. If you don't have a Kardashian glam squad at your beck and call, a total beauty overhaul is undeniably intimidating, but if there's one thing we've learnt is that all of us are keen to shake things up - with the right guidance.
That’s why, when the new summer collection from arrived on our desks, we felt like our opportunity to experiment had arrived. Dubbed the ‘Expressionist’ range, the collection mixes pops of vibrant colour with structured, contoured skin, inviting folks like us to step out of the ordinary and literally express ourselves through our make-up. Illasmasqua have long been industry leaders in all things bold, bright and beautiful - but would the leap into hyper pigmentation be a bit too much for us to take?
Well, actually, no - not at all. Though their latest lip colours are strong, they’re exceedingly wearable and not at all scary - in fact, they’re like our usual red lipstick, but better. And as for the contour stick, whilst we’ve all seen that terrifying Kim K contour tutorial, the brand have done their bit to educate their customers on exactly how to achieve the perfect blend using their .

Contouring is nothing new in the celebrity world, with make-up artists worldwide hailing it as an essential part of any red carpet look. Now, it’s filtered into the mainstream but it’s definitely not without its pitfalls (think streaky lines, dramatic skin colour differences, difficult to blend). Luckily, Illasmasqua have developed a water-based formula that’s hard for even a beginner to fluff up - and better still, after listening to customer requests, it’s now available in two additional shades to cater for all skin tones.

Illamasqua Antimatter lipsticks are legendary for their pigmentation and staying power, so releasing an additional 6 new shades was only ever going to be a good thing. They’re a great way to step out of your comfort zone without letting go of your safety blanket entirely. When it comes to our eye shadow application, it tends to all fall into two camps. The first, a subtle nude or brown for day. The second, a smokey eye for night. Yeah, hardly inspiring stuff. That’s why Illamasqua’s 12 new matte and metallic eyeshadow powders are the ideal opportunity to try something new. Plus, they’ve curated tips and tricks from their famed Illamafia into a whole host of videos to educate you on techniques so you won’t end up looking like your teenage self anytime soon.
