There was a time when wearing a technical jacket came with an expectation. If you were wearing it, you’d better have a summit story ready - something with altitude, grit, maybe a near-miss with the elements. These days? The only climb most of us are doing is up the escalator at Bank station - and even then, we’re doing it in Gore-Tex.
Outdoor attire - or Gorpcore if you want the shorthand - was once reserved for campers and climbers. So how did it become the uniform of modern life? Not in a try-hard, head-to-toe way, but in fragments: a Salomon trainer here, a North Face puffer there. Clothes that were designed for the unpredictable have found a natural home in… well, everyday predictability. It’s something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by British outdoor brand Blacks who, rather than dig their heels into the old ways and gatekeep its wares from us normies, has welcomed us into the fold - making it easier than ever for us to add these brands to our everyday line-up. And, to acknowledge that shift, it’s also given itself a shiny new rebrand.
For most Brits, Blacks has always been there - dependable, somewhere your dad loves, and the place you’d go when you actually needed something functional. Boots before a countryside trip, or a tent for Glasto. Founded in 1861, it’s a brand built on utility, not trends. But our definition of utility has changed. We don’t really divide our lives or our wardrobes into separate, neat categories anymore - work, weekend, outdoors. It all bleeds into one. You might start the day at your desk, end it in a park, and spend the weekend chasing some version of fresh air, however that looks and we need kit that can keep up. Blacks’ new look and feel isn’t a reinvention, exactly - more understanding what its customers need every day, not just on the occasional excursion. Its product line-up is still grounded in performance, centred around the big name brands that know what they’re doing (Rab, Patagonia, The North Face, Fjällräven, Salomon).
Blacks’ change is most obvious across its newly reworked stores - Glasgow, Harrogate, Aintree, Meadowhall and Brighton - where the experience and style has been dialled up without losing the substance. You can still get properly fitted for boots by someone who knows the difference between “water-resistant” and “waterproof”, while those who require proper hiking and climbing gear can shop from the best of the best – just now alongside more of the staples we want everyday.
